INPE Releases Amazon
Deforestation Rate in 2010
Monday, October 03, 2011
The National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE) has completed the mapping and calculating Amazon deforestation rate from August 2009 to July 2010. Measured by the Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Project (Projeto de Monitoramento do Desflorestamento na Amazônia Legal – PRODES), the final result, obtained through analysis of 213 Landsat images, has computed 7000 km ².
Deforestation rate between 2009-2010 has decreased 6.2% over the previous period (August 2008 to July 2009), which were measured 7464 km ² of deforestation.
The difference of 8.5% between preliminary estimate released in November 2010 (6451 km ²) and the consolidated deforestation rate is within the margin of error of 10% estimated for this methodology.
PRODES is one of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation actions of the Plan for Amazon Deforestation Prevention and Control (Plano para Prevenção e Controle do Desmatamento na Amazônia - PPCDAm) and has been recognized as a fundamental contribution to disseminate information on deforestation in the region.
The table below shows the share of each state in the Amazon deforestation rate.
This result confirms the downward trend in Amazon deforestation rate, which has been observed since 2005, when PPCDAm activitites began, as the chart below.
The maps of deforestation areas, satellite images used in this project and tabular data used for calculating the annual rate are available at PRODES/INPE website: www.obt.inpe.br/prodes
