The first of the hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way – estimates range from 100 billion to 400 billion – may have begun shining 13 billion years ago, even before the galaxy had completely formed. This possibility is raised by a groundbreaking chronographic map of the oldest stars in the Milky Way. The main conclusion of the study is that the galaxy started to form from the inside out: the first stars appear to have emerged at the center, with more and more popping up closer to the out
