CBERS Program to be Discussed in China

Friday, June 29, 2012

Between July 2 and 6, the director of the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais – INPE) Leonel Perondi will be in China with the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil (MCTI) Marco Antonio Raupp and the president of the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) José Raimundo Braga Coelho. In Beijing, the continuity of the CBERS Program (China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite) will be discussed.

The leaders will meet the minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang and the minister and deputy minister of Industry and Information Technology Miao Wei and Chen Qiufa, also other experts from both countries.

They will visit the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), the China National Space Administration (CNSA) and the Chinese Space Center, where is the CBERS-3 satellite, scheduled for launch later this year.

The space partnership between China and Brazil, started in 1988, has ensured both countries mastering the remote sensing for Earth observation technology.

Industrial Policy

Headed by INPE in Brazil, CBERS increases innovation in the country, which qualifies and modernizes its industry to meet the challenges of the space program. The development of CBERS-3 and CBERS-4 (planned for 2014) has provided about U$800 million in investments in the domestic industry.

The industrial policy adopted by INPE allows the qualification of suppliers and contracting services, equipment and subsystems of the national companies. Thus, beyond being an example of international cooperation in High Technology, CBERS generates skilled jobs and economic growth.

CBERS also has made Brazil the world’s first country to distribute online satellite images free of charge. Since 2004, data released by INPE has been used in forest monitoring, mapping of agricultural areas and urban growth, among others. The data availability results in new applications, reflecting in the country's socioeconomic development.
