INPE Flies Over Deforested
Areas in Mato Grosso
July 06, 2011
From June 1 to 3, National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and Brazilian Environmental and Natural Resources Institute (IBAMA) experts flew over northern Mato Grosso, Brazil, to check deforestation alert pointed by DETER. In this region, where there are such a lot of deforestation rates, were inspected about 90 warning points that reach 200 km ².
Experts flew 16 hours, 180km in radius around SINOP city, to check areas pointed by DETER in recent months. Mostly, clear-cutting deforestation has been verified – when native forest is completely removed – but areas suffering progressive forest degradation also have been checked.
DETER warning system is based on satellites and it aims to guide public environmental agencies surveillance. According to IBAMA – which was in the mission and lent the helicopter – some areas identified as deforestation has an Environment Secretariat of Mato Grosso State (SEMA) authorization.
A full report is going to be published soon by INPE, which performs actions at the fields to confirm data obtained by satellites of its monitoring systems. This mission was recorded in more than thousand photos, which are available in www.obt.inpe.br/fototeca.
