2010-06-08 09:39:42
RIO DE JANEIRO, June 7 (Xinhua) -- About 103.5 square km of rainforests disappeared in March and April in Brazil's Amazon region, roughly the size of Paris, said a new report.
The National Institute of Space Research (Inpe) said in the report on Monday the deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon increased by 95 percent year-on-year over the period.
According to the Inpe, the state of Mato Grosso reported the highest deforestation figures in March and April: a loss of 76.4 square km of rainforests, or 79 percent of the total.
The real situation could be worse, since technicians could only observe 54 percent of the Brazilian Amazon in March and 56 percent in April. The rest of the region was covered by clouds due to the rainy season.
