The Medal of Legislative Merit, highest honor that can be offered by Brazil's House of Representatives to people who provide outstanding services, will be awarded to the winners of 2011, on Wednesday (30/11), in Brasília. Gilberto Câmara, General Director of Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais – INPE), will be among those honored. The ceremony will be at 3 pm, at the "Salão Negro" in Brazil's Congress.
Personalities, institutions, programs or social movements, civil or military, domestic or foreign, which render services or relevant actions to society, have annually been honored.
Director of INPE since December 2005, Gilberto Câmara joined the institution in 1980. Graduated in Electronic Engineering from Aeronautics Technology Institute (Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica – ITA), also Master's Degree and PhD in Computer Science from INPE. As leader of R&D in GIS and Image Processing at INPE, participated in the development of major remote sensing and satellite image processing software, also projects such as DETER and PRODES, which have monitored Amazon.
In latest April, Gilberto Câmara received a Dr. Honoris Causa from the University of Münster, one of the largest in Germany, in recognition of his innovative work in Geoinformatics. Gilberto Câmara is also a professor of INPE's graduate programs on Applied Computer Science and Earth System Science.
