TerraClass Will Be Presented in Mato Grosso

Thursday, March 08, 2012

On Tuesday (3/13), data on the use of deforested areas in Mato Grosso will be presented in Cuiabá by the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa), which together carry out TerraClass project.

The presentation opens the seminar on "Sustainable Land - Ideas to restore and preserve degraded land," held by the State Secretariat of Environment (Sema) at 8:30 a.m. in the Famato auditorium (B Street, Administrative Policy Center - Cuiabá-MT, Brazil).

TerraClass data resulting from the analysis of information on deforestation occurred by 2008 listed in Prodes inventory, an INPE system that maps annual deforestation in the Amazon using satellite images. To show what was done with the 720 square kilometers of cleared forests, TerraClass classified the land use of deforested areas in that biome.

Maps were generated for each one of the nine states in the region, considering the following thematic categories: agriculture, clean pasture, woody pasture, pasture with exposed soil, regeneration with pasture, second-growth forest, occupations mosaic, mining and urban area.

Once launched in Brasilia in September last year, TerraClass was presented in Pará State and now the same happens in Mato Grosso. All data, as well as the executive summary of the project are available at INPE’s website. The page can be found in "Amazonia", in the list of "Products and Services" of the website.

Satellites

The satellite monitoring is now essential in avoiding deforestation to protect biodiversity, halt climate change and generate information for the implementation of policies aimed at sustainable development. Since 1988, INPE has operationally mapped Amazon deforestation through Prodes, a system internationally recognized for its excellence and pioneering.

Developed by the Department of Earth Observation at INPE, there are three operating systems - beyond Prodes, Deter and Degrad - which operate independently, but complementary. TerraClass, conducted by staff of the Amazon Regional Center from INPE, located in Belém, in partnership with Embrapa, is part of the improvement of technologies developed by INPE to protect environment.

Available on the internet, data on Amazon deforestation have provided subsidies to public policies aimed at the surveillance and development of that region, confirming INPE’s commitment of generating and providing a transparent data and studies for society concerns.
