Role in Brazilian Intelligence
Friday, August, 05 2011
The importance of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in "Brazilian strategic intelligence" was highlighted by Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Aloizio Mercadante, in commemoration of INPE's fiftieth anniversary held last Thursday (8/4), in Sao Jose dos Campos (SP), Brazil.
On that occasion, INPE's Master Plan was released, which features short-and medium term goals, emphasizing satellite programs (document available here). During the ceremony there were many tributes to institution's employees. INPE was also honored by the City Council.
"All this technology and intelligence are a pride to Brazil, a huge contribution for the country development," Mercadante said, after reminding the use of data and services from INPE in territorial planning, to combat deforestation, in natural disaster prevention and in agriculture. He congratulated INPE's management and staff, saying that Institute helps transform the region into an industrial and technological hub.
In the near future, he stressed the construction of a warning system to improve landslides and floods prevention caused by climatic extremes. He also spoke about the prospect of a breakthrough in Amazon monitoring in 2012 due to CBERS-3 launch.
Vocation
"Brazil is an environmental power and aim to be the first developed tropical country in human history," said institute's director, Gilberto Câmara, during his speech. "INPE is the leading global institution for R&D on Space and Environment for the tropics. This is our vocation and we want to keep it and extend it." Check out Gilberto Câmara's full speech here.
