The Brazilian sounding rocket VSB-30 will launch in the coming days, an unprecedented scientific experiment to study the behavior of liquid hydrogen – fuel used in rocket engine – in microgravity environment in which objects (or people) have no weight.

Developed by Air Liquide Advanced Technologies and the French Space Agency (CNES), the research will help European scientists in the development of future developments of the European Ariane rocket engines with liquid fuel.

The release operation will be coordinated by the Swedish company SSC (S wedish Space Corporation) and the German Aerospace Center DLR, which maintains a cooperation agreement in the field of suborbital launches into the upper atmosphere and microgravity research.

The likely date for the launch, according to the deputy director of the Aeronautics and Space Institute (IAE), aviator Colonel Avandelino Santana Junior, is the 8th of February.

According to the deputy director, the release operation of the Brazilian rocket, named ”Cryofenix”, will take place at Esrange launch base, 200 miles from the Arctic Circle in Sweden.

The VSB-30 is a suborbital vehicle, two-stage solid propulsion and capable of carrying scientific and technological loads of 400 kg up to a height of 270 km. For microgravity experiments, the rocket enables the burden remains up to six minutes above the altitude of 110 km.

The rocket was produced in conjunction with the DLR to meet a demand of the Microgravity Program of the European Space Agency (ESA). Before the VSB-30, the DLR used the British Skylark rocket to send their experiments into space, but the model was discontinued its production. About 80% of its components are supplied by the Brazilian space industry.

The partnership of the Brazilian DCTA researchers (Department of Aerospace Science and Technology) with the European microgravity program started in 2001. To date, the VSB-30 rocket has conducted 14 successful launches, 11 from the center of Esrange and three in Brazil, the Alcântara Launch Center (CLA), in Maranhão.

According to the website of SSC company, are provided for the other six experiments launches this year with the VSB-30 rocket from Esrange. In one mission, scheduled to take place between July and August, a new rocket will be used, the VS-30 / Orion, which uses a Brazilian engine, the S-30 in the first stage, and an American, the Improved Orion, in the second stage.

A delegation of representatives of DCTA shipped to Sweden last week to finalize the details of VSB-30 mission and sign a partnership agreement with the SSC. The agreement provides for the exchange of information and human resources in development and launch operations, as well as space propulsion technologies and ecological propellants, among other projects.

The DCTA agreement with SSC also provides for the construction of a launch site for the Brazilian rocket VLM (Launch Vehicle Microsatellite) in Esrange.

The VLM project progressed in late December with the signing of an agreement with FUNCATE (Science Foundation, Applications and Space Technology), which will allow the hiring of the first industrial project partners: Avibras and the Cenic. ”The VLM-1 project is designed to have the participation of industry from the earliest stages of their development,” said the director of DCTA, Air Brigadier Alvani Adam Smith.

The rocket was developed in partnership with the DLR to meet the growing demand for the release of ”CubeSats” (smaller satellites in cubes) and microsatellites (150 kg). In 2014, according to Silva, the company invested R $ 10 million in the development of VLM.

”The resources needed to hire the manufacture of engines and other subsystems with domestic industries is $ 85 million in the coming years,” said Silva. The completion of the first rocket flight, he said, is expected to take place 27 months from the hiring of industries.

Comment: This one seems like a good opportunity for Brazil and not to such a Russian proposal for the BRICS. Will be held? Well, this is something that we can only know for sure in 2018 when it provided the qualification launch of the VLM-1. Before that, with the government we have, the only thing certain is that this moron reckless and stupid will continue wreaking havoc in the future of my country.
