Member of the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters", the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE) brings together experts from Europe, England and Canada space agencies who represent the consortium of institutions for provision of satellite data in disaster situation.

From March 5-7, the International Charter delegation has the opportunity to meet satellite projects and facilities of the Integration and Testing Laboratory (LIT) and the Tracking and Control Center (CRC), in Sao Jose dos Campos, and the Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies Center (CPTEC) and the Center for Remote Sensing Data (CDSR), in Cachoeira Paulista.

The International Charter aims to provide a unified system of reception and dissemination of satellite data to authorized users at places affected by natural disasters.

"The data must be distributed with a commitment to help mitigate the effects that these natural or technological disasters could cause to human life and properties," says Ivan Barbosa, head of the Imaging Division at INPE.

Due to INPE’s performance in the International Charter early in 2011, Brazil received a lot of satellite images of the Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro State, free of charge.

Since 2000, when it was created, the International Charter has benefited approximately one hundred countries, in about 300 episodes such as earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones, floods and fires, among others.

Besides Brazil (through INPE), institutions and space agencies from Canada, France, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Argentina, China, India, England and the United States are members of the International Charter for data supply.
