Rio Hosts International Conference
on Atmospheric Electricity

August, 05 2011

It starts this Sunday (8/7) in Rio de Janeiro city, the largest conference about lightning ever known. In its 14th edition, the International Conference on Atmospheric Electricity (ICAE 2011) is going to happen for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere. So far, few countries had the opportunity to host the event, including the United States, Russia, Japan, France, England, Sweden and China.

The event is coordinated by Atmospheric Electricity Group (ELAT) of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in Brazil.

There will be 37 participating countries, surpassing 30 in China, 2007. ICAE 2011 also has a record number of papers, 317, and the record so far was 300 papers at the conference held in Russia, 1992.

Brazil has the largest number of full papers to be presented, 77, followed by United States with 63. "The progress of Brazilian scientific research on lightning is striking, considering that Brazil began its participation in the conference just over a decade," says researcher Osmar Pinto Junior with INPE.

On Monday (8/8), at 10:45 am (UTC-3:00) at the Sheraton Rio Hotel & Resort, there will be a press conference to present the main scientific advances in this area and announce the results of research carried out by Brazilians. Among the studies to be presented include:

1. How the lightning incidence varied in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo the last 150 years;

2. What new technology recently implemented in Brazil may bring forward for research on lightning in the country;

3. A new world´s estimate of lightning deaths and how Brazil is included in this context;

4. Using high resolution meteorological models to forecast lightning incidence in a city;

5. A summary of the latest discoveries about lightning physics from research done in Brazil;

6. A new model to determine critical points of lightning incidence in Brazilian power transmission lines;

7. New results from urbanization impact in large urban centers on lightning incidence;

8. How global warming is affecting lightning incidence in Amazon;

9. How Amazon fires can affect storms characteristics;

10. Latest results from research about the protection of aircraft due to lightning incidence;

11. Latest technologies for monitoring lightning aimed at protection of grids.
