The popular
vote secured the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (Instituto
Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais – INPE) among the finalists for the
MundoGEO#Connect 2012 Award. Winner in 2011, this year INPE is nominated for
two categories: “More prominent public institution” and “Best educational and
research institution”. INPE’s Director, Gilberto Câmara, was voted again as
“Person of the year in geospatial industry”.
The award is
an initiative of MundoGEO Portal, which opened online voting to choose the Top
5 in each category. Then, the community vote to elect who should take the big
prize of the geospatial industry in every category. To vote, go http://mundogeoconnect.com/2012/en/award/vote/
Voting ends on
May 18, yet the awards ceremony will take place on May 29 thru 31, at the Frei
Caneca Convention Center, in São Paulo (SP), Brazil, during the
MundoGEO#Connect LatinAmerica 2012, an event that combines seminars, trade
fair, courses and other activities related to the geospatial industry.

Gilberto
Câmara is competing for the second time in the category that elects the best
professionals that make the geotechnology market grow sustainably due their
innovative work. The INPE’s Director was recently chosen by the Global Spatial
Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI) – which brings together scientists,
experts, agencies and companies worldwide – to receive the "Global Citizen
Award."
Institution
Created in
1961, INPE has carried out a wide range of studies, such as deforestation,
weather, climate change, and origins of the universe. It is now considered a
reference in Remote Sensing, Meteorology, Space and Atmospheric Sciences, Space
Engineering and Technology, and Earth System Science. Also leads development of
open source software for Image Processing and Geoprocessing.
INPE allows
Brazil to be capable of producing high quality space science, doing satellites,
monitoring Brazilian territory, getting a modern weather forecast,
understanding global changes and making Space closer to Brazilian society.
