Gilberto Câmara, Geoinformatics scientist and General Director of Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE), has been recognized as "Senior Member" of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, with more than 90 thousand members worldwide.

The title of "Senior Member" is given to ACM members with at least 10 years of professional experience and who have demonstrated performance in Computer Science that sets them apart from their peers.

Profile

Director of INPE since December 2005, Gilberto Câmara joined the institution in 1980. Graduated in Electronic Engineering from Aeronautics Technology Institute (Instituto tecnológico de Aeronáutica – ITA), also Master's Degree and PhD in Computer Science from INPE. As leader of R&D in GIS and Image Processing at INPE, participated in the development of major remote sensing and satellite image processing software, also projects such as DETER and PRODES, which have monitored Amazon.

In latest April, Gilberto Câmara received a Dr. Honoris Causa from the University of Münster, one of the largest in Germany, in recognition of his innovative work in Geoinformatics.
Gilberto Câmara is also a professor of INPE's graduate programs in Applied Computer Science and Earth System Science. More information about his curriculum, lectures and work presentations are under
