Summer School on Materials and Structures for Hypersonic
Hello reader!
Summer School on Materials and
Structures for Hypersonic Flight
DATES: August 14 - 27, 2011
LOCATION: University of California, Santa Barbara
The International Center for Materials Research (ICMR) and the National Hypersonics Science Center (NHSC) are pleased to announce a residential fortnight-long summer school on Materials and Structures for Hypersonic Flight. The school will be held August 14 – August 27, 2011, at the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The format will be tutorial, with emphasis on fundamentals and examples from current research by the speakers. The plan is to dedicate the mornings to lectures and the rest of the day to discussion groups, software and experimental demonstrations, and student posters.
The program will include overview lectures to highlight: (i) the unique challenges and issues in hypersonic flight, (ii) the developments in emerging ceramic composites, ultra-high temperature ceramics and metallic alloys, (iii) manufacturing technologies for complex structures, and (iv) test protocols and available facilities for probing materials under conditions that emulate those in hypersonic flight.
The organizing committee comprises F.W. Zok, T.M. Pollock and D.B. Marshall. The ICMR summer schools are coordinated by T.M. Pollock (ICMR Director) and R. Thea (Program Coordinator).
We welcome applications for the Summer School from graduate (PhD) students, post- doctoral fellows and early career faculty. Participants are expected to be actively involved in research activities related to high-temperature materials and structures. Local hospitality, meals, and housing will be provided. Partial travel support may be available. Please indicate on the application if you wish to apply for travel support.
How to apply:
Lodging and meals will be provided and there is no registration fee. Travel support is available.
1. You can apply by visiting the following link: APPLY HERE
2. Graduate students should, in addition to the above application, have their research supervisor email a letter of recommendation to Ra Thea at rthea@icmr.ucsb.edu.
Application Deadline:
The deadline to submit an application is April 1, 2011. All applications will be acknowledged by email.
