Designed to measure the quality of water and aqueous extracts of the environmental samples as well the concentration of certain gases in the atmosphere, the Environmental Research Laboratory in Aerosols, Aqueous Solutions and Technologies (Laquatec) was opened on July 28th by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in São José dos Campos (SP).

With capability for handling and analyzing the environmental samples, the Laquatec, an INPE’s facility of the Earth System Science Center (CCST) will be used by researchers from several areas of the Institute, as Weather Forecast and Climate Studies Center (CPTEC), Sensors and Materials (LAS), Combustion and Propulsion laboratory (LCP) and Earth Observation (OBT), besides other partner institutions.

Their findings will impact on environmental and climate change studies, biogeochemical cycles, emissions, among others. "In addition to chemically characterize environmental samples - air, water, soil, plants, etc. , the lab works on developing and testing technologies with applications in the quantification and detection of chemical species," says Cristina Forti, an INPE’s researcher and responsible for Laquatec.

Settled in two rooms of the building “Circuito Impresso”, the Laquatec has acquired equipments to perform analysis by liquid chromatography technique, measurements of carbon and nitrogen and is about to getting other facilities. The site is prepared for handling samples, water quality probe calibration, characterization of sensors, aerosols collecting assembly, among other activities.
